Mayor Marwan: Mos Def vs Lee Fields, Cole World, Star Slinger Remix

mayormarwan:

It came in very foggy, very gritty … But just to hear a little of the melody, it was worth listening to the static. ~ Lee Fields

Sleeping Bags released their self titled debut a couple of weeks ago via Easter Everywhere Records and we like what we hear. Liquored up with reverb and fuzz, the band’s pounding melodies are nothing to shy away from. Check out “Cantaloupe” below.

You can head here and click the Sleeping Bags “order” link and download some free MP3’s off the next page to see what you think…or, you know, go ahead and purchase.

Foster the People - Pumped up Kicks

It isn’t very typical of tuneage to feature a song from the Billboard charts but Foster the People isn’t a typical band. Sources say their emergences into fame is thanks to websites like Hype Machine, which, granted, has helped the trio keep a pretty level head about their meteoric year. It also doesn’t hurt the band members grew up doing a lot of charity, like building homes in Haiti and helping orphanages in Mexico.

Still, despite their do-gooder attitude, Foster the People further prove the point that with a catchy, upbeat sound (bonus points if whistling is included), you can pretty much write any sort of lyrics you like. And I can’t help that I love the idea of lyrics being completely misunderstood or misheard - like Springstein’s Born in the USA or other songs I’ve written about. Is it wrong I get a kick out of imagining an audience happily singing along without thinking twice about the words?

You’d better run, better run, outrun my gun

All the other kids with the pumped up kicks

You’d better run, better run, faster than my bullet

The human race does an excellent job at putting things in the back of our mind - pushing them out and eventually forgetting. No where is that more apparent than the last several years, where a new this or a revamped that completely replaces whatever came before it. We forgive transgressions, we overlook problems because it’s convenient…the ability to forget is hands down one of the greatest human abilities. And worst.

Sometimes, though, you just want to remember. That’s how I feel when I listen to “The War On Drugs”. Americana has a special place in my heart - anything that can channel the Boss and remind me of life as a free spirit is commendable, a testament to us a people. I’m not saying “Come To The City” is a bastion of human creation…I’m only saying I dig the shit out of it, and I think you will too..

I found LA-based The Dead Ships while scouring the internet for new music, stumbling across them via Buzzbands LA. I’m glad I did.

The Dead Ships create jams made for beers and dimly lit bars, enhanced by gruff vocals and pop melodies that enhance the sound into something destined to leave behind those self-same bar room floors. “You Were Young” is my favorite track off their excellent The Dead Ships EP. It’s filled with ooh’s and whoa’s, backed by some sparse garage rock instrumentation that jangles right along to vocalist Devlin McCluskey’s soulful vocals.

At 2:27 into the track, the song takes on a new life and roars into “A” status, cementing this duo as a band to watch.

You can find The Dead Ships on Facebook and follow them on Twitter. If you want to pick up The Dead Ships EP, and you should, it’s available for free via the band’s bandcamp page below.
